The Kananook Creek Boulevard is an urban regeneration project situated in the Frankston Central Activities District (CAD). The project aimed to develop Kananook Creek Boulevard as a pedestrian promenade in order to encourage greater pedestrian and bicycle activity and stimulate redevelopment of the adjacent properties.
Urban art was a key feature of this redevelopment project. Five precast concrete walls formed the setting for the creation of the ‘Terrain Generators’. Influenced by fractal geometry found in nature, the artwork reconciles the natural environment of Kananook Creek with the urban environment of Frankston.
Additionally, the Zoetrope bridge, a shared pedestrian and vehicle bridge, allows pedestrians a place to sit, rest, walk and view. Using rolled steel tubing attached to the side of the bridge, a sense of flow and movement is created.
HTPS managed the installation of this public art along with a shared bicycle path along Kananook Creek including the gabion retaining walls, and landscaping works. This new bicycle path serves as an extension of the Nepean Highway bicycle path and allows for improved infrastructure and access across the municipality.
The boulevard will eventually be lined by buildings accommodating cafes, housing and other uses to introduce more active uses and create an inviting and safe atmosphere. The boulevard is an important public space for Frankston, a destination for a broad range of users.
